Cutting Snowflake Costs Without Slowing Down

Snowflake's separation of storage and compute is powerful, but it also makes it easy to overspend. The good news is that most cost problems trace back to a few recurring patterns.

Right-sizing warehouses is the first lever. Larger warehouses finish faster but cost more per second, so the sweet spot depends on your query profile. Auto-suspend and auto-resume settings ensure you never pay for idle compute.

Query design matters just as much. Pruning with well-chosen clustering keys, avoiding SELECT *, and materializing expensive intermediate results can dramatically reduce the work each query performs.

Finally, monitoring closes the loop. Tagging warehouses by team and tracking credit consumption over time turns cost from a surprise at the end of the month into a metric you can actively manage.
